Virtualization

VMware(Edit)

VMX configuration file(Edit)

Manually set the start-time of a VM(Edit)

In case you want to have a virtual machine that always starts at the very same point in time - your birthday or what ever here is how to do it: Take the rtc.StartTime value and calculate the offset to the given date in seconds and adjust the StartTime.

The "time.synchronize" parameters make sure that this startTime will never change.

By the way - for a test simply copy the text in the box into a text-file and rename the file to always-start-tonight.vmx

This little machine does not need any further files.[1]

Convert OVF / OVA file format(Edit)

The OVF and OVA formats are made to make easier the deployment or transfer of virtual machines from various vendors. A small utility tool[2] can convert one format to the other, and vice-versa. To do so, here are the steps:

  • Download and Install VMware vSphere or download the ovftool from VMware official;
  • Navigate to the directory where the VMware player was installed, by default:

 C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Player\OVFTool\

  • Open the console (Shift + Right click, Open console window here)
  • On the command prompt, use the following to convert OVA to OVF, or the latter to convert from OVF to OVA:

 ovftool.exe path_to_your_OVA_file.ova Path_to_your_OVF_file.ovf

 ovftool.exe path_to_your_OVF_file.ovf Path_to_your_OVA_file.ova
